A Phoenix from the Ashes

Where to start with a blog? I think the beginning is a very good place to start. Besides, Phoenix Rising’s beginnings are fascinating. We didn’t just start with a few psychiatrists looking to stake a claim. Our story is bigger than that.

We saw a wrong that we needed to right. We saw injustice, abuse of power, victimization, and trauma. And we spoke. We spoke until it hurt. We made our call heard and gave voices to those who couldn’t speak. And from that we rose, like a phoenix rising from the ashes.

And from those ashes Phoenix Rising was born. We opened in July 2005, and our mission was simple: to empower and strengthen individuals and families in their growth and recovery. With fewer than 10 people, we needed to just make rent. And with the help of our friends and family, we gained momentum. Mary Ellen Cameron (then at ICAN) graciously gave us space to get us on our feet. We grew. And then we did more than just make rent. We thrived.  Our community needed us just as much as we needed them, it turned out.

The rest, as they say, is history. Phoenix Rising Behavioral Health & Recovery is a downtown Canton fixture, now in our 13th year of operation. One thing remains consistent for us: our community’s unending support. Because of that connection, we are able to continue to expand our services, all while strengthening our core treatment: Psychiatry, Counseling, and Case Management.

With this growth we can cover more of our community’s needs. Phoenix offers individual, couples’ and group services including treatment for depression, anxiety, mood disorders, LGBTQ issues, trauma, chemical dependency, dual diagnoses/co-occurring disorders, elderly issues, and many, many more.

I want you to know that Phoenix Rising is different. I want you to know we care. Our Family Center offers an inviting space for families and children to feel welcome and nurtured in a safe and caring environment. We also have dedicated spaces for art therapy, meditation/yoga, music with instruments, and a space complete with exercise equipment. Our licensed and trained staff are devoted to you and your family’s overall wellness. We just wouldn’t have it any other way.

We’re here because we want to be. We’re here because we want to make a difference. We’re here because we want to help. And I think we can all agree we could all use a little help now and then.
